Wolfenbüttel

Wolfenbüttel is a town in Lower Saxony. While people from outside Germany would recognise the city's name from a bottle of Jägermeister, it's also home to a number of timber-framed buildings as well as a famous library.

Wolfenbüttel is overshadowed by nearby Braunschweig, and its one claim to fame is rarely associated with the town: being the site of the Jägermeister distillery and its corporate headquarters. It's also known as the location of the internationally renowned Herzog August Library and for having the largest concentration of timber-framed buildings in Germany, around 1,000. In 2022, it was home to 53,000 people.

Wolfenbüttel is located on the Oker river, about 15 km south of Braunschweig. In 1432 it became the residence of the Duke of Brunswick.

• 🌍 Schloss Wolfenbüttel (Wolfenbüttel Castle), Schlossplatz 13. A baroque castle and museum. Part of the building is used as a high school; it also houses a great example of Baroque state apartments, which are open to the public as a museum.  
• 🌍 Lessinghaus, Lessingplatz 1.  
• 🌍 Herzog-August-Bibliothek, Lessingplatz 2. One of the largest and best-known collections of ancient books in the world. It is especially rich in bibles, incunabula, and books of the Reformation period, with some 10,000 manuscripts.  
• 🌍 Klein-Venedig ("Little Venice" town canal), Stobenstraße. A picturesque waterside building ensemble.  

• 🌍 Jägermeister Distillery Tour, Mast-Jägermeister SE, Jägermeisterstraße 7–15. (updated Jan 2018)
• 🌍 The Elm-Lappwald Nature Park (Naturpark Elm-Lappwald) (east and southeast of the town). The Elm is the largest and most attractive beech forest in North Germany. Amongst the varied landscapes of the natur park are large areas of forest, moors, springs, lakes, heathland, salt meadows and chalk downs, rich in plant species. (updated Dec 2024)

The town centre offers many opportunities for shopping. Market days are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
