Pomona (Queensland)

Pomona is a rural town in the Shire of Noosa, Queensland. Pomona is Noosa Shire's 'living heritage town'. It has a number of heritage-listed sites. In 2021, the locality of Pomona had a population of almost 3,000 people.

Pomona was home to the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi indigenous peoples for thousands of years before it was settled by Europeans in the late 1880s. Early settlers collected timber from the area. Pomona was named after the Roman goddess of fruit.

It is about 135 km north of Brisbane.

• 🌍 The Majestic Theatre, 3 Factory St. This heritage-registered theatre was built in 1921 and caters all different types of community events. It has been promoted as the oldest silent movie theatre in the world and the oldest continuously operating movie theatre in Australia.  
• 🌍 Noosa Shire Museum, 29 Factory St. Established in 1985, this historical museum, housed in a former shire hall, is operated by the Cooroora Historical Society and preserves Noosa Shire's pioneering past. It houses a display of Australian antiques and maintains a Keeping Place of indigenous cultural objects once used by the Gubbi Gubbi peoples.  
• 🌍 Cooroora Masonic Temple, 9 Station Street. A heritage-listed community hall that was built in 1923. (updated Aug 2025)
• Pomona Police Station and Court House, Red Street. A heritage-listed former police station at was built in 1934. (updated Aug 2025)

• 🌍 Mount Cooroora, Tuchekoi National Park, Pomona (2 km SW of town). A 439-m mountain peak and volcanic plug with beautiful provisional panoramic views and a variety of native Australian flora and fauna. The surrounding area is of great importance to Aboriginal people and there are many sites of Indigenous cultural importance across the region. It is a popular site in the cooler months for visiting tourists climbing to the summit to appreciate excellent views looking east to the Sunshine Coast and west into the Mary Valley. Hikers, horse riders and mountain bike riders use the excellent trail network at its base.  
• 🌍 Yurol State Forest, Yurol Forest Dr. A very lush and beautiful forested area with numerous winding 4x4 tracks and hiking trails.  
• King of the Mountain. An annual running festival held on the fourth Sunday of late July, in which competitors run up the slopes of Mount Cooroora in Pomona.
